LED Light Therapy
If you had asked us 100 years ago, as a human collective, “Do you think hovering different coloured lights over our skin could heal our skin?”, do you think people would think we’re crazy?
What we find miraculously crazy is that different coloured LED lights actually stimulate and penetrate the skin differently! And the results prove that it helps with wound healing and acne, as well as reducing fine lines!
But first…what is LED light therapy?
LED (light-emitting diode) light therapy is a non-invasive treatment that penetrates the skin’s layers to improve the skin. Interestingly, NASA were finding ways to promote wound healing in astronauts and one of the studies included using LEDs back in the 1990’s. They found the LED’s effects helped cells and tissues grow!
What does LED light therapy do?
LED light therapy helps treat a variety of skin concerns and conditions, including:
- Eczema
- Hair loss
- Mild to moderate acne
- Psoriasis
- Rough, scaly, precancerous spots on the skin (actinic keratosis)
- Rosacea
- Sun damage
- Wounds
- Wrinkles
Are there different kinds of LED light therapy?
LED light therapy uses various wavelengths that correspond to different visible colors. Each colour penetrates the skin at different depths and therefore, stimulates different responses within the skin.
- 💙 Blue Light – Affects the uppermost layer of the skin and works to clear congestion and destroys acne causing bacteria.
- 💚 Green Light – Assists with skin tone correction and aids detoxication to reduce redness and irritation.
- 💛 Yellow Light – Penetrates a little deeper and stimulates collagen production and assists wound repair to naturally heal and regenerate skin from within.
- ❤️ Red Light – Travels further into the skin, reducing inflammation, continues to stimulate collagen production, increases blood circulation and lymphatic flow to encourage cellular renewal.
- 🖤 Near-Infrared Light – This one penetrates the deepest and increases white blood cell production to regenerate, rejuvenate, tighten and repair inflamed and ageing skin.
How long does it take for LED light therapy to work?
Significant benefits depend entirely on your skin condition. Typically, most need to have a series of in-clinic treatments weekly for about a month. Then you might need maintenance treatments every month or every few months. The in-clinic devices are more powerful than at-home devices and are far more effective.
Can anyone receive LED light therapy?
LED light therapy isn’t appropriate for everyone, including people who:
- Take certain medications that increase their sensitivity to sunlight, such as isotretinoin and lithium.
- Have a history of certain conditions, including skin cancer and inherited eye diseases.
What is the recovery time after LED light therapy?
There isn’t a recovery time for LED light therapy. Besides being careful about sun exposure in the 48 hours after treatment, you can return to your normal routine. Unlike other skin treatments, such as a chemical peel, there isn’t any damage to the skin.
